Hurricane Windows: Superior Protection for Storm-Prone Areas

HURRICANE WINDOWS

Hurricane windows, also known as impact windows or storm windows, are specially designed and engineered to protect homes and businesses in areas prone to severe weather conditions. These windows are constructed with heavy-duty frames and impact-resistant glass to withstand the high winds and flying debris associated with hurricanes and tropical storms. The primary purpose of hurricane windows is to prevent damage to the building’s structure, safeguard occupants, and minimize the risk of water intrusion during extreme weather events. By fortifying your property with hurricane windows, you can enjoy enhanced protection, peace of mind, and potentially save on insurance premiums in hurricane-prone regions.

Benefits of Installing Hurricane Windows

Installing hurricane windows offers numerous advantages that go beyond simply protecting your property from storm damage. Some of the key benefits include:

1. Increased Safety

The impact-resistant glass and sturdy frames of hurricane windows are designed to prevent glass shattering and resist penetration from flying debris during high winds, ensuring the safety of occupants and protecting the interior of your property from damage.

2. Energy Efficiency

The multi-layered design of hurricane windows often includes low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, which helps to reduce heat transfer, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This improvement in thermal performance can result in lower energy consumption and utility bills.

3. Noise Reduction

Thanks to their thick glass and robust construction, hurricane windows are effective at reducing outside noise, creating a more peaceful and quiet living environment for occupants.

4. UV Protection

The special coating applied to many hurricane windows can block up to 99% of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This protection helps to prevent fading and damage to your furnishings, flooring, and artwork caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight.

5. Insurance Discounts

Many insurance companies recognize the value of installing hurricane windows and offer discounts on premiums for homes and businesses that have them, leading to long-term cost savings for property owners.

Selecting the Right
Hurricane Window for Your Needs

There are several types of hurricane windows available, each designed to provide varying levels of protection against severe weather conditions. Some of the most common types include:

Impact-Resistant Windows

These windows are made with laminated glass, which consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with an interlayer of clear polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). In the event of an impact, the glass may crack but will remain held together by the interlayer, preventing dangerous shards from scattering and maintaining the structural integrity of the window.

Storm Windows

Storm windows are typically an additional layer of protection that can be installed over existing windows. They can be made of glass, rigid plastic, or flexible plastic sheets, and are usually installed as a removable or semi-permanent addition to your home. While not as strong as impact-resistant windows, they offer an extra layer of defense against wind and flying debris.

High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) Windows

Designed specifically for regions with the highest risk of hurricane damage, HVHZ windows are tested to withstand the most extreme weather conditions. These windows feature enhanced impact resistance, stronger frames, and reinforced anchoring systems to provide the best protection against powerful storms.

Hurricane Window Films

Installing hurricane window films

While not a standalone type of hurricane window, window films can be applied to existing glass panes to provide an additional layer of protection against impacts. These films are generally made from clear polyester and can help hold shattered glass together, reducing the risk of injury and protecting the interior of your property.

Choosing the Ideal Storm Protection: Windows or Shutters?

When it comes to protecting your home or business from severe weather conditions, both hurricane shutters and hurricane windows offer valuable solutions. To help you make an informed decision, we’ll compare and contrast the pros and cons of each option:

Usually takes a total of 4 visits and 3 days, excluding the time spent waiting for the windows to be custom made for your home.

Starting with our first chat, Cool View will set up a convenient time to come to your home and go over the entire process and take measurements.

Once the measurements and the style of window have been solidified, you will receive a professional, detailed proposal from Cool View!

After you agree to the terms and conditions of the proposal, Cool View will collect a deposit and place the order for your windows. You will also receive a packet of information for permitting which will include a notice of commencement (NOC) – see below- already pre-filled and ready for your signature with our streamlined notary process!

A notice of commencement is a vitally important part of the permitting process, and per state of Florida law (Chapter 713 of the Florida Statutes) no inspection can be scheduled or completed without a NOC recorded with the clerk of court for the county that the home is located in. While this may be intimidating it all boils down to one thing.

You’ve selected the best window and door installation team in Tampa Bay and we will make this process a breeze for you. It takes about 1 minute of your time!

Once the permit is approved, and the windows arrive, the fun begins!

Prior to our arrival, we have already picked up the windows and doors, insured that all the hardware and tools we need to install them are on the truck, all the cordless tools are charged, and crew needs are covered.

The professional Cool View team will arrive at your home, with your windows, typically around 8AM, but we will tell a more exact time a few days prior to our arrival.

We have a company truck and large cargo trailer to safely transport your windows. Generally, we park in front of your house, in the street. If that’s a problem in your neighborhood, let us know so we can make other arrangements.

First, of course, the old windows have to come out. We remove your old windows and take care of disposing of them in a responsible way. If you want to save all or some, make sure to let us know.

Most installations only take a day, but some may be more involved and take more time.

When we install a window, we take great care to make sure it fits in the opening properly and operates smoothly. We caulk any seams that need it, and we make sure that your windows won’t channel water into your home.

After the installation is complete, and our quality control supervisor has inspected each and every window and door WITH YOU and you are satisfied, the final payment will be collected, and the county inspection scheduled.

The building inspector will come to your home and inspect the windows. Sign the permit placard placed on the closest window to the front door and that concludes your window installation journey!

Each of your top quality windows are produced, for the most part, right here in Florida by real Floridians. Each order is placed the same day you make your initial payment and takes its place in the production lineup. The volume of work and material availability at the factory will dictate the length of time it takes to get your new custom sized windows!

Cool View will keep you informed so you know what’s happening with your windows.

As a homeowner in Florida, you absolutely can do this, but without the decades of experience Cool View has, the process can be fraught with pitfalls and expensive lessons learned. Often homeowners will order their own windows and try to pay an installer directly, only to realize that they spent thousands of dollars on windows that won’t fit or are incompatible with their home, that they cannot return and now must hire a window company and start the process all over.

An additional hurdle for homeowners is navigating the permitting process or worse yet, skipping the permitting process all together. Navigating this process can be simple if you’ve done it hundreds of times and know all the intricacies of the system. IF that is not the case it can be tedious and full of
bureaucratic roadblocks. Should a homeowner in Florida start work on their own home with no permit, and the city becomes aware of the fact, they can place a stop work order on your front door. This is not
a good path to walk down.

The Florida building code (section R-301.2.1.2) mandates that all new windows installed in windborne debris regions must have the proper protection. This is a very detailed and time-consuming subject, if you’d like to read more here is a helpful link.
